O'Death @ Asterisk* Art Space - 7/8/06

I couldn't pass up the opportunity to catch my boys from O'Death in what would certainly be a more appropriately wild setting than when they performed (still very well, mind you) in the tight quarters of Pete's during their residency there last month.  The bands started much much later than they were originally scheduled to; I don't think O'Death actually started until 12:30 Sunday morning or so, but it was well worth the wait.  The packed performance space in Asterisk* was jumping and do-si-do'ing like crazy throughout the high energy set, which was more comparable to when I was first blown away by the band at Brooklyn Fireproof a month ago.

Keep reading for some more from Saturday night...I mean, Sunday morning's set.

The guys sounded great as per usual...their fiddler was absent at this performance for the first time I've seen, but a mandolin player/backing vocalist who I've yet to see was performing with the band.  The violin was missed, but the mandolin was definitely a nice addition.  Although if it were up to some of the shouting audience members, everyone in the band would be playing nothing but banjo.  Greg Jamie introduced a couple new songs during the set saying that they scared him a bit, but they sounded great, so nothing to fear.  And all the usual crowd-pleasing numbers were once again terrific.

If you are in the New York area and haven't caught O'Death live yet, remedy that situation as soon as possible.  It looks like they were just added to the lineup this Friday 7/14 at Bowery with The Avett Brothers and Nicole Atkins and the Sea, so get your tickets here for that show.  And if you live elsewhere, a big tour is coming during August and early September, so check their Myspace for dates and venues.
