Hockey Night @ Cake Shop - 5/9/06 (plus more tour dates)

I realized I've been spending a lot of time at the Cake Shop recently.  But I haven't seen anything there like the show put on by Minnesota's Hockey Night last night.  They are the latest in the line of really good stuff coming out of the Land of 10,000 Lakes (Tapes 'n Tapes, Cloud Cult, etc.).  I've been talking these guys up for a while now (last year's "Keep Guessin'" was one of my favorite under-the-radar albums from last year), but this was my first chance to catch them in person, and they did not disappoint in the least.  I honestly can't figure out why they don't have a larger following already.  They really blew the roof off, and the modestly-sized crowd was packed as close to the stage as possible, and jumping and singing along throughout the set.  You know, just your typical dual drum, dual lead guitar, good ol' fashioned down home rock and roll show.  So so much fun.

The set was casual (no set list, they decided between songs what to play next), but ridiculously energetic and just a ton of fun to see.  They played several songs from "Keep Guessin'" as well as a few older songs, and a couple of the new songs that are currently featured at their Myspace.  It must have been half-naked drummer night though, as shirts stayed on for about half of the first song.  Granted, they are from Minnesota, so it does probably feel pretty warm for them here.

Hockey Night are currently wrapping up their tour, but you have a few chances left to see them, including one more show in NYC:

  • May 10, GoodVibes Art Space, Kutztown, PA
  • May 11, PA's Lounge, Somerville, MA
  • May 12, The Brass Rail, New London, CT
  • May 13, Mercury Lounge, New York, NY

Do yourself a favor and catch one of these remaining shows if you can, before they head back home to get back to work on the follow-up to "Keep Guessin."
